The Electoral Commission has justified their reasons for the compilation of a new voters’ register before the Council of State. The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, took time to explain to them the technical challenges facing the old voter register as well as the high cost of maintaining it as compared to acquiring a new one. She told the Council that the new system would be “a robust, user-friendly, cheaper and state of the art that will assist in the delivery of free, fair and credible elections in the country.” The Information Technology Consultant of the EC, Dr Yaw Ofori Agyei, took members of the Council through an in-depth lecture justifying the reasons for the acquisition. Kofi Adams, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Buem constituency Former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the Electoral Commission for its move to compile a new biometric voters register. Like his party, the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Buem in the Oti region described the decision of the EC to change the current voter register as illogical, saying the old register can be cleaned if the EC believes it has names of some persons who are not qualified to be voters in the country.  The EC on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, asked Parliament to approve ¢444,846,663 for the compilation of a new voters’ register prior to the 2020 general election. Ethiopia’s prime minister on Thursday applauded the decision by three of the four ethnic-based parties in the ruling coalition to merge ahead of the 2020 elections.
